Questions Answered!
Tell us what's a typical day or weekend like for u?
A typical weekday would be as follows- work, dinner, home, go online, and chill with some music then sleep. I don’t even have time for TV, and I used to be an addict.
A weekend usually comprises of movies, dining, catching some live bands, grocery shopping and if I’m really, really lazy, bum at my friend’s house, have a dvd marathon and order in.
Very unexciting life I have.
What is your current occupation?
I work for the Gahmen.
Which schools did you attend in Singapore and what course did you major in?
I was from Temasek Secondary, then Tampines JC and then NUS. Majored in Psychology.
How did you get yourself so involved in the fashion industry? (eg. interns? freelancing?)
I was an intern for Style: magazine. Stuck with them for a few months and got opportunities to style and know more people from the industry.
What are your views on Singapore’s fashion industry? (Especially on the recent buzz about those LJ girls. hahaha i can’t wait to hear your views on this!)
I’m assuming here that the ‘fashion industry’ you were referring to is with regards to the Singaporeans’ attitude toward fashion.
Hmmm, It’s definitely thriving. The kids are more fashion-savvy (I was still in my ninja turtle tee, patchwork silk shirt from K mart and corduroy jeans when I was their age. Not cool at all) and Singaporeans in general are more open to experimenting….as a herd.
I guess the herd mentality is very much ingrained in our society. For example, during my 4 years in University, I’ve seen a shift of “uniformed” looks from the miniskirt + tank top to high-waisted skirt + tank top + gladiators. I swear, I though it was mandatory or something for girls to wear that to university.
Another example would be the Zouk flea market. Funnily enough, on all account that I was there, my morale dropped to below minus 10. Reason being, I felt out of place. I felt like I don’t belong with these hip people. I felt like I dressed too simply to be labeled cool and fashionable. I don’t have the bangles and head accessory thingy. I don’t have that slept-with-my-makeup look. I don’t dare wear cool oversized tee over leggings. Basically I felt that I didn’t meet the pre-requisite of the fellow Zouk-ers.
Maybe that explains the herd mentality. People do not want to feel like I felt when I was at the Zouk flea market, thus they adorned themselves with clothes that were deemed cool by the public eye and become, what is now labeled an “LJ girl”.
Please don’t take whatever I said the wrong way. I am very pleased that Singaporeans have taken more pride in what they wear. It’s just that I hope we can be more confident in showing our style rather what’s in fashion.
How would you consider one fashionable?
Being fashionable is easy. Just follow the trends dictated by magazines, blogs etc.
But being stylish is another thing. A stylish person does not dress to impress. A stylish person may not necessarily know who Karl Lagerfeld is and what the current trend are, but is well aware of what looks good or her/him and stays true to that style. A stylish person exudes confidence and charm.
What inspires your attire when getting dressed? (e.g. are you inspired by a song, mood, a specific item, a look to mimic, do you just put on whatever is comfortable, or is it a combination of things )
Nothing! Just the order of rotation in my wardrobe. I’ve implemented a sort of line-up in my wardrobe according to colour and the time I bought the article. So for Day 2, I’ll wear the top that I placed next to Day 1’s top and match them with any pants or skirt I fancied. I know. Weird.
What would you wear with a pair of platform turquoise heels?
A Herve Leger Body-Con dress in black with a kick-ass leather jacket and a thin diamond bracelet.
